A project by Mark Powell and Arróniz Arte Contemporáneo, Mexico City. An action and an exhibit. You buy a photograph, you buy a house in Detroit. Preliminary proposal and first draft. April 28th, 2015.
Photography when used in the language of real estate is mainly illustrativeits main purpose is to turn people into «buyers» and other people into «sellers.» I have been collecting real estate photography for the past year. It is an odd and lowbrow type of photography, but an extremely efective use of the photographic medium. It gets the job done. New owners and sellers are made from initially by just looking at photographs. I really like to think about the photographer’s mind set when taking these pictures. It must be a form real estate bliss...
I would like to extend and twist the aura of the photograph with the idea of turning the object into a purely theoretical confrontation of possession for the viewer.
It is a simple idea and concept
If you buy my photograph you become the owner of the object represented in the photograph, in this case, a house or a specific piece of property and place in Detroit.
Land, they don’t make it anymore
I am in the preliminary phase of obtaining two or three properties and abandoned land in Detroit. The following photographs below are some of the houses and land I have been considering for the project. Properties will be chosen not by a standard of traditional real estate «value,» but by their «potential,» representation as objects portrayed in photographs by my own determined definitions and meanings.
I will rephotograph and appropiate all properties obtained for this project.
