The result of discoveries at bazaars and junk shops, of selective purchases, of presents from friends, of the reuse or recycling of family albums and newspaper archives, Carlos Monsiváis’s photography collection is composed of over 20 000 pictures, selections of which have been shown in recent years.

The exhibition The Past to Come: Revisions of the Carlos Monsiváis Photography Collection is a project that combines the efforts of the Museo del Estanquillo, the Centro de la Imagen and Luna Córnea magazine. Though still preliminary in terms of its organization and assessments, the survey attempts a comprehensive approach at the eclectic assortment of photographs that the well-known author of Los rituales del caos amassed. Though it will definitely have to be followed by more specific studies, this exhibition focuses on the micro-historical narratives intermingling in a selection of photo albums, series of prints and individual snapshots, and on how this photographic phantasmagoria reveals the affinities and presence of the person who put the collection together and never ceased to form part of it. | Alfonso Morales
