The photographs that make up the Fondo Héctor García are an example of how images remain intact for history, transcend their journalistic nature, and become historical, social, aesthetic and cultural reference points; they are documents that witnessed important moments and figures in our country’s history, a visual record of the course of modernity, a portrait of Mexico in the 20th century. The archive is an example of this form of survival and adaptation of the languages of the past to the technologies of the present, with an eye on the future.

In this way the documents, periodical materials, photographs, negatives and objects from the archive become archaeology, as they are pieces of a living history that is not yet distant.

In this context, the archive holds the work of Héctor García as a photojournalist and is a mechanism through which we can review our history, in order to give new meaning to the development of modernity in our country and contain a vast visual archive within a concrete space that allows the reconfiguration of our everyday perspective. | Gabriela González Reyes
