Dreams of Immortality treats the importance of visiting cards photography in the creation of a social identity in Mexico during the second half of the 19th century. The portraits show the aspirations of modernity held by Mexican society, as well as the creation of a representational language that contributed to the establishment of an elegant and distinguished social figure, considered ideal. The exhibition reflects on the impact photography had in creating a social use of the visiting card, as an object of promotion and consumption for a sector that was moving upwards in Mexican society. At the same time it aims to provoke an aesthetic experience in the viewer where he or she participates not only in identifying the era—through the clothing of the subjects and the furniture  surrounding them—but also in the personal stories inscribed on the cartes de visite. The exhibition provides a glimpse into the past in order to explain the desires for immortality.
