Martín Chambi’s exhibition allows us to see his practice as an image-maker through a selection of sixty photographs. Light is a primordial element here, cast on the figures, landscapes and sometimes the photographer himself as the protagonists of his pieces.

Of Quechua origin, Martín Chambi represents the everyday life of communities in the Cuzco region—including agricultural work, crafts, and religious ceremonies—to show us his own environment. He succumbs to the splendors of the ancient city of Machu Picchu, in which he poses as one figure among many. His pictures of arid, snow-covered, mountainous landscapes afford us glimpses of Peru’s diverse geography, while other photographs of his introduce us to indigenous communities whose various festivities and celebrations, such as weddings and traditional holidays, are a display of social plurality.

In this extraordinary photographer’s work, we come face to face with a past that is also the present, not only in Peru but in all of Latin America, from Mexico to Patagonia.
