The images of religious festivals taken by Ferdinando Scianna in towns throughout Sicily inevitably recall the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, when this region of Italy and Spain formed a single kingdom. While in some images a connection emerges with the Holy Inquisition, phenomenon that also took place in New Spain, whose persecution and torments—as in Spain—were applied to the Jews and converts on American land. The pieces from the Museo Nacional de San Carlos collection of Francisco de Zurbarán, Francisco de Goya, José de Ribera, Jacopo Robusti, José Villegas and Cordero, to name a few, draw towards this dark moment and are the framework for the dialogue proposed between the photographer and the Barroque style; the still lifes of Mateo Cerezo and Jacob Gillig serve the same purpose. Additionally, the sculptures from the 19th century by Jean-Jacques Prader, 1985, and Miguel E. Schulz, 1875, accompany the portraits of beautiful women, immobile like sculptures in time.| Carmen Gaitán
