Battlefields is a selection of works made by Cuban artists from 1990 to the present day, The peculiarity of Cuban photography from this period—known as the periodo especial—is how it finds a balance between photographic language and the language of visual art on the one hand, and between sociopolitical history and current affairs on the other. Cuban photographers interact with their art projects, subordinating all devices to the need to represent the tensions between individuals and the social structure. They present not so much a chronicle of the “special period” but the site of the crisis that is generated at this historical moment.

Photography practice in Cuba is more attuned to local sociopolitical affairs than to the current international aesthetic-artistic situation. This lends the medium a sense of immediacy and sophistication, and allows photographers to analyze local conditions in order to produce their discourse, shifting between pop culture, representations of political power, references to the history of Cuba and more complex conceptual reflections.
