The cycle of day and night is our primeval clock: everything around us looks different under the guise of light or darkness. This is how Enrico Gianfranchi’s photographic experiments repudiate the classical notion of the photographic positive. His original prototype was a series of portraits that depersonalized subjects by superimposing anatomical studies onto them inside the darkroom. This experiment transformed itself into a kind of note that Gianfranchi conserved for years: a letter he received that alluded to the Nietzschean notion of the origin and that contained questions such as whether one’s degree of sensitivity remains constant.

The artist’s answer to this is a direct intervention upon the negative; like a photosensitive memory, the individuals portrayed observe the emulsion being removed, cut away in a scarification-like process. There is a change in the degree of sensitivity as we return to the past, since the action is an aesthetic sketch that attempts to remember the past in order to return to the erudition of the original.

The feat is achieving the illusion in a single image.
