Study Nº 5 to find the perfect stone

This piece is one of the photographic results of a project entitled The Perfect Stone. The study consisted in applying a method of industrial design to find the "perfect stone": a blunt, hand-thrown weapon designed specifically for riots or confrontations between rival factions.

I received advice for the project from specialists in different fields. Each interview or consultation involved a discussion about the bodies that undertake the violent action of throwing a stone. The outcome of Study Nº 5 was that we found the "perfect stone."

The "perfect stone" is the one that lends the user an advantage in a riot. To provide this competitive advantage, the stone has to have the perfect ergonomic and aerodynamic balance in order to guarantee victory.

Though this project is based on photography in terms of its formal and archival aspects, as a documentary and discursive platform about a specific situation, it also substantially involves sculpture, video and possibly the printing of a book.

In a way, Study Nº 5 to Find the Perfect Stone shows the sophistication of a primitive weapon made for a specific purpose—where one interprets an object and a situation and immediately applies the experience of all the people one has consulted.

Mexico City, 1983. Studied visual art at the Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado "La Esmeralda." His work has been featured in the group shows Una comunidad Mad Max at the Yonke gallery in Ciudad Juárez and Cambios y fuerzas at the Galería del Centro Cultural Teatro de la Ciudad in Cancún. He has received the Fonca's Jóvenes Creadores grant (2012-13) and the Focaem's Jóvenes Creadores grant (2011). He participated in the XXXII Encuentro Nacional de Arte Joven in 2012.
